My review of Ruggables ⎸ The Pros and Cons. Would I Recommend It Today in 2023?
Below I outline the pros and cons of Ruggable and whether or not I would recommend it.
Pros:
Ease of Use & Convenience: One of the most significant advantages of Ruggables is their machine-washable design. You can easily remove the rug cover and toss it into the washing machine, making it convenient for cleaning up spills, stains, or pet accidents. This feature sets Ruggables apart from traditional rugs that are often difficult to clean. The smaller the rug, the easier to manage. Many customers have complained about how to assemble the rug with the cover and pad but it is not that complicated once you understand the process. My largest rug is an 8x10 and that is the maximum that I can probably handle by myself. I haven't tested a 9x12 and probably will not.
Customer Service: This says a lot about a company and my experience has been outstanding. Granted the company has grown over the years and may not accommodate as much service. I have had issues with wrong sizes being sent, faded patterns, shrinking and stains not being removed. After a few email and photo exchanges, I was either given a new cover, credit or discount. Truthfully, the customer service had me coming back again and again. The rugs are not perfect but the company does their best to make it right. At least this has been my experience. Ruggable.com has many transparent and honest reviews as well. Do your research.
Wide Selection: Ruggables offer a wide range of designs and patterns to suit various aesthetics. They offer a multiple range of sizes, shapes, colors and designs. Whether you prefer a modern, bohemian, or traditional style, Ruggable has something for everyone. I was excited when they announced the plush and shag rug option and now they added jute, outdoor and faux hide. They even have doormats and bathmats. I own the classic style, plush, shag, outdoor and doormats, so I can only speak to those.
Collaborations: Something unique to Ruggable is the collaboration they have with many designers and brands to bring you an evolving selection of new designs. They are currently collaborating with Gray Malin, Marvel, Jonathan Adler, Disney and Star Wars. Whatever option or design you are searching for, they probably have it. There are many styles to select from including farmhouse, moroccan, modern to kids. Ruggable also carries seasonal rugs for the holidays if you are into that.
Non-Slip Pad: Each Ruggable rug comes with a non-slip pad, which seems to add a layer of safety. No one wants a rug that slips around when the dogs and/or kids are running in the house. It is especially valuable for households with elderly individuals, as it helps prevent slips and falls. The non-slip pad is similar to a yoga mat. The base of the rug is not machine washable but the cover is easily removed and interchangeable. Currently the pad comes in 2 sizes (which wasn't available when I purchased), standard 1/8" thick and cushioned 2/5" thick.
Cons:
Shrinking/Fading: This is my biggest con with Ruggables. For my indoor rugs the issue of shrinking has been a big one especially with the high traffic rugs that need a lot of washing. I follow specific instructions on how to properly wash the rugs (cold water, delicate, low heat) but it still shrinks leaving the black non-slip pad exposed. For my outdoor rugs, the issue has been fading. My rugs are not in direct sunlight but a covered patio. Regardless, they seem to fade over time with some sun exposure.
Quality & Thinness: Another drawback of Ruggables is their relatively thin construction. The thinness compromises the quality. While the low-profile design allows for easy cleaning and versatility in terms of furniture placement, I find that the classic Ruggable rugs lack the plushness and cushioning provided by thicker rugs. For this reason the plush, shag and premium were introduced along with the thicker cushioned pad but it all comes with a price.
Price: It's worth mentioning that Ruggables are generally priced higher than traditional rugs of similar size and style. The added convenience and durability factor into the cost, making Ruggables a more significant upfront investment especially with the pad you select. However, the long-term value and ease of maintenance may outweigh the higher initial price for many. Once you invest in the pad, the covers are cheaper to replace.
Would I recommend it?
The convenience is a true game-changer for busy households with pets and children. So if you have pets and kids, yes. If you wish to save the hassle of professional cleaning, yes. In my experience, Ruggables offer a compelling solution for easy rug cleaning. While they may lack the plushness of thicker rugs and come with a higher price tag, their numerous advantages make them a worthwhile investment, especially for busy households. Consider your specific needs and preferences to determine if Ruggables are the right fit for your home.
