Why Goals Fail and What to Do BEFORE Setting a New Goal
Sometimes, we focus too much on achieving our goals, but then we notice that the foundation needs to be more robust to withstand the hardships, failures, challenges, and doubts throughout the journey. Frustration and disappointment creep in, and we forget the path that we are on. Our goals don't fail because we didn't work hard enough; our goals fail because we lost focus and consistency and changed the course entirely. The execution was all wrong.
Let's take a health goal as an example. Your goal is to "get healthy". You're not quite sure what that entails, but you need to straighten up and take some action. It's a new year, and everyone else is doing it, so you set a goal. It could be to lose weight or exercise. Regardless of the goal, the big issue is your need to understand how to plan for the goal. Humans naturally resist taking action unless there is a bigger purpose.
Here are 3 Essential Steps to Take Before Setting a New Goal:
#1 Have Gratitude
Before moving forward with any future goal, you must take time (preferably every day) and appreciate the present moment. Yes, having gratitude before goal-setting is an actual thing. It may seem counterintuitive as you want to improve your current state, which may be miserable. But most of us are constantly chasing more significant and better. We don't stop and appreciate the present moment or even understand our past. Unfortunately, focusing on the future breeds anxiety. Once we achieve our goal, it never feels "enough," so we continue goal-setting with this empty feeling inside. If you don't appreciate where you are today, you will not appreciate where you land tomorrow, no matter what goals you achieve, and that cycle will continue. Tomorrow is never promised. Today is the journey that matters.
#2 Why This Goal?
Sometimes, we get so excited to pursue a goal that we accelerate our execution. Everything is going smoothly, but the first obstacle or challenge appears, and we get frustrated and want to quit. We forget why we even desired the goal, to begin with, and start to question its worth. So what happened? There was not a strong enough "why" behind the goal. What was it all for? Without a clear "why," you will lose motivation and fall short of your goal. Your why needs to be solid and purposeful with intent. Is it for your kids? Is it for a loved one? Is it for freedom? Is it for longevity? Is it for love? Is it for strength? Your why should be written down and spoken out loud because challenges will come your way and if you why isn't strong enough, you will give up. So define your why.
#3 Clarity and Manifestation
Clarity leads to manifestation, and manifestation leads to achieving your goals. But first, you need to be clear on what you want. Before you write down a goal, get rid of the clutter in your mind and what others want for you, and listen to what you want. It may take some time to dig deep and let go of others' expectations, dreams, and goals for you. Remember, this is your dream. For the law of attraction to work, you must sit and visualize your dreams. And not just once. It would help if you also felt the outcome. Feel yourself already in possession of what you desire. Imagine the joy, satisfaction, and fulfillment that it brings. And then feel the emotions associated with achieving your goal.
When it comes to goal-setting, practicing gratitude, defining your why, and having clarity is the start of your roadmap. Utilizing these three steps gives your goals a stronger foundation to withstand the challenges ahead. It will motivate you to take action to achieve your dreams.
